Im gonna enjoy to own a mammogram, assist!!.
Answers: Its not bad I promise. Every single new lenient that I've ever had comments on how they thought it was going to be so much worse. I've hear tons of stories about how you will be bruised, you will have to pilfer pain medicine, you will be squished completely flat, etc... The tech is going to explain everything to you, or at least possible she should. Compression is unfortunately the most important constituent of having a mammogram. It compresses the breast to achieve uniform infiltration of the xray beam, also it spreads your breast tissue out so that it is easier to see things within your breast. It should feel tight but NOT be painful. If it become painful for you then let somebody know your technologist and she can either readjust you or lessen up on the compression. Let her put some compression on your breast though, more compression equals a better picture. There is a fine line though where on earth more compression will not flatten out your breast much more but will cause you unnecessary discomfort. A technique that I use sometimes it to let the merciful put her own compression, there is a wheel that you can turn next to your hand and after I put the initial compression I let them turn the rudder themselves to further compress the breast. This way the patient feel in control and is more relaxed and can usually tolerate greater compression since she knows that she can stop if it get painful to her. Ask your technologist about this, if she is unwilling to work beside you so that you feel comfortable, especially since this is your first time, ask for another technologist. This whole procedure should hold less than 5 minutes, especially if they have digital equipment. Relax and I promise that you will stroll out of there saying "that be it?? that was nothing" At least that's what my patients say-so. GOOD LUCK!.
